About his Art

He attacks the canvas with sabre-like slashes of colour or with filament-like trajectories in a dense weave, in a chromatic labyrinth. Most of his portraits take as their expressive core the material interlacing of life, which fades through vibrant, rapid marks, abruptly projected toward the viewer. His mark is “living blood”. The observer’s eye is thus struck and unsettled by the expressive force of colour, by great brushstrokes—impetuous, multi-directional, diagonal, crossed, broken, interrupted and then resumed,
vehement assaults on the canvas with relentless insistence.
His portraits, almost always frontal, stare at you with a gaze most often impassive, seemingly absent. At other times, faces, disfigured by thick, material colour, burst into a cathartic scream whose expressiveness is heightened by white, black and red.
You cannot remain indifferent before Davide Vona’s painting: it grabs you, shakes you, demands your awareness. His is a presence, an assault on life with a desperation that at times you feel is also your own. There is no peace in his portraits, even in the calmer and seemingly quiet ones, where the whirling flow of colour seems to settle into softer, more sinuous brushstrokes; but it is only appearance, a momentary stillness—the true being of his painterly making lies in the clash with the real. His cry is made of pure colours; the tension emerges in the vibrating brushstroke that deforms and recomposes volumes.
Unknowingly, Davide Vona makes his own what was the intuition of the late Titian: a painting of touches, stains, “rubbings”, often ending up spreading colour with broad palette-knife strokes; a painting capable of releasing the vital tension of a creation that is the crystallisation of a pain, of a drama. That of existing, evidently, of surrender to an unfathomable mystery, but also that of creating. Forms seem to live by a kind of “empathy” with the viewer, because they share the dimension of creatures—of fragility, of life on the edge, of appearance and disappearance.

“I liked it—you have an apparently very fast technique that gives strength and freshness to your work..... really beautiful.”
You have tremendous technique, Davide; Mizio is impressive.... for such youth, it’s rare to see paintings with this kind of power...
